Apr 09, 2006 :: Namakkal, new town

The Hindu today carries a detailed story on how Namakkal in Tamil Nadu has cleaned itself up and gained ISO 14001 certification for civic administration- that’s a first in India.

Thanks to the efforts of municipal Chairman, K Gandhiselvan, garbage is segregated and composted, roads are cleaner, cattle-free and quieter. He has carried most of the town’s 53,000 people and got them involved. The town’s six slums have spear-headed the effort.

The town is now planning a public garden, a swimming pool, libraries and computers in schools. Full story
