The visit numbers reported on the home
page are dynamically drawn from the SiteMeter server. By their
definition, a visit is from a unique computer logged on to the
Internet for up to 30 minutes. What this means is that, if a
visitor to GoodNewsIndia spends say about 10 minutes viewing
pages, visits another site and returns here within 30 minutes,
it is counted as one visit and not two. The number of pages viewed
by her would be counted under 'Page Views'. This is a more realistic
method than reporting hits. In 'hits' count for instance, if
a page is made up of a text file and two image files, a count
of 3 hits is made. In yet other systems, every visit -- even when simulated by the same logger-- to a page
is counted under both visits and page views.
